FTM 2008 Beta available

Experimenters cautioned to backup original data first

From: Beth Gay bethg@integrity.com
DearMYRTLE,
I have a message for your blog. CAUTION everyone to backup their FTM family file and make a copy of the file and rename it. If they open their FTM file in the new version they will not be able to reopen it in the older version. Also the download is huge so they need to have broadband or access to it. Here is the link:

The Family Tree Maker 2008 beta is now available for download by the public at http://beta.familytreemaker.com. Please feel free to share this link with friends and family, post it to mail lists or forums, etc. Everyone is welcome to download the beta.

Best regards,
Beth Gay

DearBETH,
Thank-you for the heads up. Folks, Beth is the list administrator for a new mailing list:
WIKI-GenPages. You can search the WIKI-GenPagesarchives for a specific message or browse them, going from one message to another. Some list archives are not available; if there is a link here to an archive but the link doesn't work, it probably just means that no messages have been posted to that list yet.

REGARDING FAMILY TREE MAKER 2008 BETA
Ol' Myrt checked out the site at Beth's suggestion, and discovered among other things that the program is very large – 400MB of space is required. Remember "BETA" means test version of something that may or may not work out to be the next version of a software program. See: Software release Cycle at Wikipedia.

From FTM's 2008 beta download site we read:

"This is a beta program; therefore there are no guarantees that the program will perform correctly, nor are there any warranties of any kind.

Since this beta version is still in development it may crash or fail to function correctly. Though unlikely, installing the program may also negatively affect the operation of your computer. Files created in this beta may not open in the release version of the product. Always keep a backup of your data in another genealogy program (such as Family Tree Maker 16).

The beta will stop functioning on August 24th. If you have entered information into the program that you would like to preserve please be sure to create a GEDCOM export before the 24th of August."

The minimum system requirements for running the program are:

  • Operating System: Windows XP/Vista
  • Processor: 500 MHz Intel Pentium II or equivalent (1 GHz or faster processor recommended)
  • Hard Disk: 400 MB for installation. Additional space required for data files.
  • Memory: 256 MB of RAM (512 MB of RAM recommended)
  • Monitor: 800x600 resolution (1024x768 resolution recommended)
  • Internet: All online features require internet access

Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
