Why call it "maps" ?

Mapping technology took a giant leap backward when Apple released iOS 6, casting aside Google Maps in favor of their own Apple "maps".  Grammarly, those quote marks are there for a reason.

9:23PM EST December 10. 2012 - SYDNEY (AP) — "Australian police are warning the public that errors in Apple's much-maligned mapping application are leading drivers headed to the southern city of Mildura to take a potentially "life-threatening" wrong turn into the middle of a remote state park."

Mashable reports there is a mini-fix, but we aren't holding our breath:

Mr. Myrt and I noticed mapping errors on our iPhones while traveling cross-country in the US this fall.
Fortunately none proved potentially fatal.

Happy family tree climbing!
