Commenting during tonight's LIVE Hangout On Air

DearREADERS,
A dear friend was concerned about how to post comments and questions and "feel part of" tonight's DearMYRTLE's live Google+ HOA (Hangout on Air). The more I listened to her, the more I began to suspect other DearREADERS may have similar questions about how to things work during the live broadcast feed. Here's the skinny on this one:

Admittedly I could have you post comments and questions anywhere (Facebook, Twitter, by blog, YouTube, etc.) but we don't have enough "staff" to keep checking everywhere during a live broadcast feed. So we narrowed it down like this:

COMMENTS are to be posted in DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community located here:  https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232

You must "belong" to the community, but it's free, and we'll approve your request in a matter of an hour or so at the most, except during the middle of the night.

SO HERE'S THE PLAN

8:55pm Eastern US - Ol' Myrt posts the unique URL to tonight's DearMYRTLE Uncut HOA in DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community located here:  https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232

JOINers may be on the "panel" or "filmstrip" of ten people during the live HOA. Since I post the link to JOIN 5 minutes before the live broadcast begins, the JOINers have time to adjust their mics and speakers.

If you click the unique URL and receive the message the HOA is "full", don't dispair. Literally thousands of VIEWers may watch the live feed, with less than a second delay, by going to DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel located here: http://www.youtube.com/user/DearMYRTLE (Be sure to click on "Feed" when you get there, otherwise you are just staring at the archive of previous HOAs and uploaded videos.

9:00pm Eastern US - the live broadcast of the HOA begins when Ol' Myrt hits the "Record" button.

COMMENTS to the DearMYRTLE's HOA panel are submitted back at DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community located here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232
So it's a good idea to have a second browser tab or window open for quick postings.

We try our best to weave your comments and questions into the discussion, just as we did during DearMYRTLE Workshop Webinars.

So have fun! Ol' Myrt here looks forward to seeing you in about 2.5 hours.

Happy family tree climbing!

HeirloomRegistry: Saving memories in the cloud

DearREADERS,
What's to keep my daughters from thinking that tiny ceramic milk cow I purchased isn't one I inherited from Grandma Frances? HeirloomRegistry.com. Without it, the memories of ancestors who have owned our real family heirlooms will disappear into thin air. Worse still, without HeirloomRegistry, my descendants will most certainly confuse the real family heirlooms from things I purchased merely because they remind me of objects my ancestors once owned.

I decided to test out HeirloomRegistry.com with this red and white ceramic pitcher that I truly did inherit from my maternal grandmother. It is in perfect condition, except for the tiny chip along the front base in the middle. I'm sure the Antiques Roadshow folks would say this may affect its value, but to me it is priceless.

PHOTO: Taken by the author.

My maternal grandmother, Frances Irene Goering
was born on 22 Aug 1905 in Chariton, Lucas, Iowa. She died on 12 Jan 1974 in Renton, King, Washington. Frances married (1) Lowell Simpson Froman, son of William Gist Froman and Louisa Mae Higgins on 25 Feb 1925. They subsequently lived in Chelan, Washington, and Seattle, King, Washington. By 1940, the marriage ended in divorce. In her later years Frances married (2) Mike A. McDonnell, as pictured below:

Back: Barbara (Froman) Player daughter of Frances (Goering) Froman.
To her left is France's new husband
Mike A. McDonnell, and his twin brother.
Front: Pat (me) and my brother Mike Player, circa 1958
at our home in Laurelhurst, Seattle, King, Washington.

Frances' father was Charles Henry Goering was born on 10 Sep 1876 in Dallas, Marion, Iowa. He died on 5 Nov 1931 at Emporia, Lyon, Kansas. He married Estelle Mae Phillips on 23 May 1900 in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa. Estelle was born on 30 Nov 1876 in that same city. She died on 11 Sep 1921 in Olathe, Johnson, Kansas and is buried at the Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, Marion, Iowa. From Estelle's death certificate and from information provided by Frances, the cause of death are known as rose cancer, breast and liver cancer. Names, dates and death bed statement are extracted from the Goering Family Bible, in posession of the author. PHOTO: Original in possession of the author.

Here's how HeirloomRegistry.com works:

1. Order "stickers" from HeirloomRegistry.com.

2. Affix the HeirloomRegistry.com sticker to an inconspicuous place on the heirloom.

3. Take a picture(s) of your heirloom - no larger than 5mb. (I had to resize mine, since my camera's default is significantly larger.)

3. Go to HeirloomRegistry.com and log in.

4. Click to add an heirloom.

5. Fill in the blanks to describe the provenance of the heirloom and upload the pic. See the screen shot below of my entry featuring Grandma Frances Irene (Goering) Froman McDonnel's small red and shite ceramic pitcher. Though I only uploaded 1 picture, there is space to upload multiple views of each heirloom.

It is possible to make the registry item private, but to Ol'Myrt this defeats the purpose of HeirloomRegistry.com.

"Be it a flour sifter, slide rule, quilt or grandfather clock, preserve the story of your precious heirlooms with HeirloomRegistry.com. It's easy to order the registry stickers, then snap pics and upload to this innovative site. I won't always be around to tell the history of our family pieces. My 8 year old grandson can search by the registry number and read about his 2nd great grandmother's red ceramic pitcher just like that!"
Happy family tree climbing!

N O W is the time to prepare for the switch yourself.

What's different, and what's still the same for DearMYRTLE attendees? Not to worry, there is still time to practice on Wednesday night!

Effective March 1, 2013, DearMYRTLE will be using the Google+ Hangout on Air (HOA) for her online events such as Mondays with Myrt and the much anticipated Mastering Genealogical Proof Study Group series.

Instead of pre-registering for a DearMYRTLE HOA, potential JOINers go to DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community on Google+ about five minutes prior to the HOA for notice of the URL For the HOA. An example of this is noted in detail in Ol' Myrt's recent post Getting into tonight's DearMYRTLE Uncut HOA.

JOINers and VIEWers may see the video of the 10 JOINers on the panel. Does this Ol' Myrt here have to comb her hair and apply lipstick?!!

More discussion and screen sharing has been noted on DearMYRTLE HOAs than during typical GoToWebinar events.

Unedited, auto-archived HOAs appear usually within 30 minutes of the end of an HOA on DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel.

Archived: Facial Recognition Webinar

DearREADERS,
Darlene Steffans had us mesmorized by options in Google's free Picasa photo software we hadn't considered before -  in particular using the "people" option to have Picasa do a bit of facial recognition detective work.  Darlene explained she had received an old photo album. She and her sister-in-law had carefully removed each photo, naming each in a spreadsheet to preserve the layout and pages. Preserving these can be helpful in identification and time line considerations.

As Darlene and her sister-in-law worked through the project, they were able to ask certain older family members who was in each picture.

It was fascinating to see how to review potential image matches and either accept or override Picasa's suggestions. It helped to be able to click and view the full image where Picasa had picked out one individual for a match to other photo images in the file. Context is everything, isn't it?

Archived: Getting into Google Plus Webinar

DearREADERS,
Once the internet access was u p and running again this evening, Ol' Myrt here has been quickly uploading archived webinars. This one was from yesterday's webinar where I explained why I am  making the move from GoToWebinar to Google+  (G+)  Hangouts on Air (HOA).

I also explained the transition process I've designed during February so there is plenty of time to get familiar with G+ Hangouts On Air.

1 SECOND DELAY AT MOST
I just heard from Mark Olsen of MyHeritage.com that he ran tests today and determined that there is less than a second delay between what the JOINer (panelists) are saying live in a Hangout On Air, and what the VIEWers are seeing and hearing. Thanks Mark!

Is there a delay in live Hangout On Air?

DearREADERS,
There is little, if any delay, in the live broadcast for VIEWers of a G+ DearMYRTLE Hangout On Air and what is going on for a JOINer on the HOA panel. I'm glad David wrote to express his concerns, so I can set his mind at ease. Please check my response following his comments.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Google Hangouts
Re:
Getting into tonight's DearMYRTLE Uncut HOA
Date: Wed, February 13, 2013 1:28 pm
From: David H
DearMYRTLE,
Just wanted to express two challenges that I see, but first let me say I understand what you are doing, why, and I support it, just see a couple challenges. First, and minor is today as a [GoToWebinar] participant, I click on one link and I'm there. It won't be that easy obviously with the Hangouts, but nothing that can't be overcome.

The second and bigger concern is that if you are a VIEWer and seeing things five minutes after the fact, knowing that will probably make me and others less likely to participate, knowing that whatever we are commenting on, or questioning is now five minutes old and the conversation has probably moved on. Again, just might be something that will have to be overcome and understood by not only the audience, but the presenters as well.

DearDAVID,

GLAD you wrote to Ol' Myrt here, David.

I don't believe the delay is anything more than a second or two - it is a LIVE video stream.

There is just an INITIAL five minute difference between when Ol' Myrt here publishes the link for JOINERS before I actually start the HOA. This provides:

  • time to get the JOINers mics working
  • time for everyone else (the VIEWers) to go to DearMYRTLE's YouTube channel, press "Feed" and make sure the other window or tab is open for post questions to the panel via DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community.

But the LIVE video stream begins at the same time for all as I press the record button.

Ol' Myrt here won't officially start the welcome until after that recording starts.

It may take some time for us to weave a live VIEWer's question into the panel discussion, but that happens in webinars as well. There it is a matter of waiting for a good time to interrupt whomever is speaking.

The real beauty of G+ Hangouts on Air is that we are no longer limited to 100 in a DearMYRTLE GoToWebinar ($99 monthly). We are continually turning people away, as I receive notices about who tries to "get in" during the webinar. Literally thousands can VIEW the live broadcast of a Hangout On Air.

So all that remains is for potential G+ Hangout on Air JOINers and VIEWers to receive "how to" info about this new process for attending. The KEY is joining the Google+ DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community, where I post that info.

We're adaptable - we're genealogists.

Happy family tree climbing!

Getting into tonight's DearMYRTLE Uncut HOA

DearREADERS,
HOA? It will be a Google+ Hangout on Air (HOA). The idea is to practice attending a HOA every Wednesday night in February, in prep for Ol' Myrt's 1 March 2013 move from the GoToWebinar platform to the Google+  (G+) Hangout On Air platform for my online genealogy seminar sessions. (OK, that's a pretty good run-on sentence, perhaps my best thus far for the year.)

DearMYRTLE Uncut - on the Google+ Hangouts On Air platform
Wednesday 13 February 2013
9pm Eastern US - The live video broadcast starts!

Here's the timeline for attending as either a JOINer or a VIEWer.

  • 8:45pm Myrt creates the HOA, inviting a few essential panelists to JOIN and get their mics working.
  • 8:55pm Myrt posts the URL for the HOA in the G+ DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community. Others may then JOIN by clicking that URL until the maximum of ten panelists is reached. Any additional potential JOINers will receive the message that the Hangout is full. Don't despair! Literally thousands may VIEW the event starting at 9pm on DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel.

  • VIEWers should open a new tab on their web browser and go to DearMYRTLE's YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/DearMYRTLEOnce there, click the "FEED" option and wait the several more minutes until the live HOA video broadcast starts.
  • 9pm Ol' Myrt will press the "RECORD" button, which also pushes our the live "feed" to my YouTube channel.
  • DearMYRTLE's YouTube VIEWers may post questions and comments for the panelists to read using that other browser tab or window for the G+ DearMYRTLE Genealogy Community. Russ and I will be sure to follow comments there, and work them into the HOA whenever possible.

TOPICS?
While we aim to keep the DearMYRTLE Uncut HOA discussion open, similar to Mondays With Myrt, we've already got your feedback about the 2013 Docu-Challenge #1: English Parish Register Marriage Entry on the docket. What would you like to talk about?

2013 Docu-Challenge #1: English Parish Register Marriage Entry

DearREADERS,
OK, are ya willing to play and learn something together on the way? Well, Ol' Myrt here has figured out how to meet the clamoring for more Evidentia Hangouts On Air through a series of "docu-challenges".

WHAT'S A DOCU-CHALLENGE?
Accept the challenge to transcribe and analyze a historical document and share it with others via comments to this blog post and during a Google+ Hangout On Air.

SO WHICH DOCUMENT, MYRT?
  1. Go to FamilySearch.org's Cornwall, England Parish Registers, 1538-2010. Drill down to Devonshire County, parish of Warrington Marriages 1813-1836.
  2. View the entry for William Warren and Sarah Bickle on pre-printed page 36, listed as FamilySearch's image 23.
  3. Use Evidentia software to analyze every assertion (claim) found in this source document. You will be citing the source, cataloging claims, weighing the evidence, resolving conflicting evidence, and making summary conclusions based on your analysis of each tidbit of information.
  4. Create a summary report about this marriage event. Copy/paste to your blog as a new post and report the link in comments to this blog. Those without personal blogs may also post their summary report in comments to this blog.
  5. Create a summary report about William Warren and be prepared to share it.
  6. Create a summary report about Sarah Bickle and be prepared to share it.
BONUS QUESTIONS - SERIES A - for the over-achievers (read that intermediate to advanced researchers.) For the rest of us, failing to take these steps with each document we encounter in our personal research may cause us to build our own brick walls.
  1. Re: the bride Sarah Bickle: What can we infer about Sarah solely using  information provided in this document?
  2. Re: the groom William Warren: What other questions about William are raised by this document?
  3. What other record groups might we search for additional information about this members of this family unit?
  4. How can we determine we're making a "reasonably exhaustive search"?
BONUS QUESTIONS - SERIES B - Concerning Evidentia
  1. RE: Evidentia: Describe the process challenges of using the software. Were there any roadblocks or concerns? If so, how did you resolve them?
  2. Be ready to share your Evidentia screens with others during the Google+ Hangout On Air by letting Myrt know via your comments to this blog. A maximum of ten panelists is available for this type of recorded event.

RELATED GOOGLE+ HANGOUT ON AIR
You've got four days to complete this assignment. We will discuss the results of our work during  the DearMYRTLE Uncut Google+ Hangout on Air, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 beginning at 9pm Eastern US. Here's Ol' Myrt's blog post about how to participate in such events. Basically:

  • Maximum of ten panelists will be receive personal invitations to the Hangout On Air at 8:45pm. Once they have entered the Hangout On Air and tested their mics, then:
  • I'll post the link to the Hangout on Air to fill up any empty seats bringing the number to ten.
  • If you click to JOIN and receive the notice the "Hangout is full", then you may VIEW the Hangout On Air as it begins to stream live at 9pm Eastern.
  • NOTE: (There is no ability to hold a pre-Hangout On Air "warm-up" as I had sponsored over on the GoToWebinar platform, because of the peculiarity of the automatic recording option.)
  • During the live event, post comments back on the DearMYRTLE Genealogy Community that the panelist will review constantly.
  • DearMYRTLE Hangouts On Air are recorded and auto-archived at DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel.

Trust no one and carry a big magnifying glass

DearREADERS,
Jenny Lanctot, of recent Evidentia webinars and hangouts fame, posted You Can Trust a Genealogist Relative, Right? on her blog Are My Roots Showing? Jenny's answer to that question is well taken on multiple counts:

1. Always revisit another researcher's work before incorporating it into your own.

2. Regarding extracts: What one person thinks is important might not be what you think important.

3.  Without a copy of the original document you cannot be sure the previous researcher, indexer, abstracter or or transcriber didn't make a mistake. We are all human.

4.Transcribe every document word-for-word, even if it is typed, as a prelude to analysis of the claims or inferences that can be drawn from the information provided.

5. The software program Evidentia encourages document analysis. It is all about looking at a document, then analyzing what the document  claims about individuals who may or may not end up being an ancestor. Evidentia summary reports are easily copied and pasted into notes for a specific event or fact in an ancestor's profile in a traditional genealogy management program.

Sandbox bullies

DearREADERS,

Apologies to my dearest readers for having to post this.

It is curious why one SLC genealogy research person persists in posting blatant self-promotion responses to my blog.

My initial reaction months ago was to think we just had a nice but inexperienced new kid on the block. But my reaching out then was rudely rebuffed.

Disregard for good manners and social media networking practices make me question research and analysis capabilities.

I don't want to play in the GeneaSandbox with braggarts or bullies.

For this reason, Ol' Myrt here shall continue to moderate blog comments to steer my DearREADERS away from such unprofessional conduct.

"unprofessional:
at variance with professional standards or ethics; not befitting members of a profession."
