Why I may give up blogging

DearREADERS,
In case you haven't noticed, there have been a lot fewer posts from Ol' Myrt lately. While it's true taking Elizabeth's course at Samford University's IGHR, wrangling with internet connectivity issues, and unpacking have taken their toll, fewer blog posts are also the result of what's happening elsewhere:

LIVE DearMYRTLE's Hangouts on Air - also archived on DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel where you'll find lively conversation during:
  • Mondays with Myrt - A great way to start out your genea-week! You may JOIN the panel or VIEW via DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel as we discuss genea-news that comes across Ol' Myrt's desk. Usually 90 minutes, Mondays beginning at Noon Eastern (New York) time.
  • Mastering Genealogical Proof Study Group Sessions - see description and schedule posted here. Usually 90-120 minutes, Sundays beginning at 8pm Eastern (New York) time.
To VIEW a live event, first check the GeneaWebinars Calendar for the latest info about the specific dates and times. Then a few minutes before the appointed hour, go to DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel and click the small down arrow to the right of the home icon, and select "Feed" from the drop down menu. With certain browsers you may need to hit the refresh button if the live Hangout on Air doesn't begin for you.

To WATCH an archived video or Hangout on Air, merely go to DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel and click the "Videos" tab to find an entry that interests you.

DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community on Google+

It's free to join, and is as easy as activating a G+ account from your Gmail menu bar. If you click:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232
the screen will prompt you to log in to your Google+ account, or to create one. Then click to join DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community, is where comments about our Hangouts on Air and my blog and content curating posts are listed.
------------------------------------

DearMYRTLE's Facebook Page
My March-May 2013 experiment comparing interaction on FB and my newer G+ Community concludes with two thoughts:
  • Currently there are more family and genealogy friends on Facebook.
  • There are more responses to my posts on Facebook than on Google+.
  • Responses to posts on Google+ appear less frivilous.
For these reasons I'll continue to (usually) cross post items on both Facebook and Google+. The exception is that my Facebook postings may refer people to my Google+ community, where the more "in depth" discussions are going forward.
------------------------------------

WHY I WON'T GIVE UP BLOGGING
The DearMYRTLE Genealogy Blog located at www.DearMYRTLE.com was once the main method for publishing my original works - Ol' Myrt's thoughts on various genealogy, organization and technology topics. The goal has always been to "get people talking about how to do research."

But as you can see, technology advances have changed things, and blogging seems somewhat usurped by conversations during my Hangouts on Air. (I put in several hours of prep work for each hour in a hangout.) My DearREADERS may still follow my blog though you'd only be getting 1/10th of the content I curate. Here are recent examples of posts I made to Facebook or Google+ that didn't make it to my blog:

MGP Study Group: Chapter 2

DearREADERS,
Be sure to head on over to DearMYRTLE's Google+ Community to comment during tonight's Mastering Genealogical Proof Study Group. Tonight we will be working on Chapter 2. You do need to join Google+, which is as easy as activating it from the menu bar on the top of your Gmail page. Then join Ol' Myrt's free community located here:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232

HOW TO VIEW
Things have changed again over on YouTube, so you won't find a "feed" tab anymore. Here are the simple steps:

1. Go to DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel located here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/DearMYRTLE

2. Click the "Videos" tab.

3. You may need to refresh the browser page. We will begin promptly as follows:

8pm Eastern US (New York)
7pm Central US (Chicago)
6pm Mountain US (Denver, Salt Lake City)
5pm Pacific US (Los Angeles)

If you need a time zone converter, there is a great one located here:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

MORE HOW
To accommodate a large group, we are using the Google Hangout On Air platform, originating at DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Community on Google+ located here:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104382659430904043232

All COMMENTS and links to assignments will be posted in the community. Participants may use a blog or a public Google document to share each assignment.

Unlike a webinar, the link for a G+ Hangout on Air isn't created until just before the event is to go live.

Closed-captioning is a feature of the live HOAs and recorded HOAs, through a service provided by Google. I'd say the speech recognition is about 90% accurate.

MGP Homework and Copyright

DearREADERS,
This past week Cousin +Russ Worthington and Ol' Myrt here met with The Legal Genealogist, +Judy G. Russell, to discuss how to style our homework with an eye to observing copyright in our study of Mastering Genealogical Proof. We decided to create this video to answer your questions:

MGP Study Group - Copyright Guidelines

The MASTERING GENEALOGICAL PROOF STUDY GROUP is not held in a "normal" brick and mortar classroom setting, where the words we speak are not published and archived on the web. Nor are we meeting in closed, small-group online sessions, where homework is shared only with 6-8 other individuals. A copyright issue could arise when any member of our group chooses to:
  • Publicly distribute the questions from Dr. Jones' workbook.
  • Publicly distribute Dr. Jones' answers from his workbook.

Since MGP Study Group panelists and participants post their homework assignments on the Internet in blog, .pdf, Google Drive and other formats, the following heading is advised in order to clearly point our readers to Dr. Jones' marvelously useful genealogy methodology workbook.

My Chapter One Homework Assignment

Thomas W. Jones, Mastering Genealogical Proof  (Arlington, Virginia: National Genealogical Society, 2013), 6. [Book available from the publisher at

Question 1 - (your personal answer)

NOTE: There is absolutely no reposting of Dr. Jones' workbook questions or answers. Anyone coming across your work would be referred to the book to evaluate your answers in context.

Love you Father-Dad!

DearREADERS,
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. How I wish I could trade this picture for a thousand words with my father-dad who passed away a few years back.

Pictured below, left to right is my step brother Jim Bennett, my father, Glen S. Player, MD and my brother Michael G. Player.

Maureen Taylor will tell you this is one of those "faked" old-timey pics taken is a specialty shop where old-fashioned clothing and props are provided. I just love this pic because it expresses Dad's humor.

My father-day is gone but not forgotten.
