How to Participate in a DearMYRTLE Hangout or Study Group

Feeling perplexed?

DearREADERS,
Most of our genealogy hangouts like Mondays with Myrt are open to all and are archived at http://hangouts.DearMYRTLE.com and on DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel. The panel participants for our study groups have been selected in advance, and are prepared to submit homework for review in advance of each study group session. There are a variety of roles folks can play in a DearMYRTLE hangout as described in the following table.

As HOST, DearMYRTLE is primarily responsible for content development, scheduling, website development, and YouTube Channel maintenance in addition to promotion through her various social media accounts.

As MODERATOR, Cousin Russ is primarily responsible for technical assistance, keeping up with the newest technology, and bringing in comments from the viewers during a hangout where appropriate.

VIEWERS may register for our hangouts using either their Facebook, Google, LinkedIn or Twitter account. They then may comment before, during and after a hangout. To "get into" the hangout, look for your personal URL to join the hangout in confirmation and reminder emails.

PANEL PARTICIPANTS must register for our hangouts using Google, and use the personal URL in confirmation and reminder emails. They will enter the hangout as a VIEWER. The MODERATOR will extend an on-screen invitation to join the participant panel. This invitation is extended in the 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of a hangout and allows time to adjust lighting and equipment.

Mondays with Myrt and most WACKY Wednesday hangouts offer:
  • All VIEWERS the option to view, listen and type comments.
  • An open invitation to any VIEWER wishing to join the panel.
  • PANEL PARTICIPANTS must have web cam, high speed wired internet access, headset mic/earphones or ear buds with inline mic.
  • Open access to the archived hangout.
Genealogy Game Night was developed as a stress-free time for folks to practice getting into a DearMYRTLE hangout.
  • VIEWERS may view, listen and type comments.
  • Daring souls may practice "getting on" the filmstrip as a PANEL PARTICIPANT and learn to screen share if so desired.
  • Open access to the archived hangout.
DearMYRTLE Study Groups are slightly different.
  • VIEWERS may view, listen and type comments.
  • PANEL PARTICIPANTS must have web cam, high speed wired internet access, headset mic/earphones or ear buds with inline mic. They are selected in advance, submit homework by noon two days prior to session. Membership in secret group to receive written feedback on homework. Special "before and after" green room access to Myrt and Russ.
  • Open access to the archived hangout.
PRIVATE DearMYRTLE Study Groups are new this year, as in the case of our DNAGen Study Group with Blaine Bettinger.
  • VIEWERS may be limited to pre-registered attendees. They may view, listen and type comments.
  • No archived hangout, so attendance at live session is required.
  • PANEL PARTICIPANTS may be limited to the guest instructor, host and moderator.
  • As always, Cousin Russ will do his level best to bring VIEWER comments into the discussion.
Cousin Russ and Ol' Myrt here are delighted to have these open-format discussions using the super technology of Business Hangouts and YouTube Events. These marvelous internet resources have enabled us to learn from researchers throughout the world.  Thank-you for your continue support.
