Family Tree Maker blog

DearREADERS,
Phenomenal! The Family Tree Maker genealogy software program now has a blog that has debuted this week at Ancestry. They’ve even provided a customer support telephone number. Good idea. This is a real first for this program. I hope they keep it up.

“Welcome to the new Family Tree Maker blog! As the Family Tree Maker Brand
Manager, I’m excited to now have a platform to communicate updates, improvements and information about our strategic direction to the community as quickly as possible. Of course I welcome comments and discussion. I would also like to make sure everyone knows about our Family Tree Maker
feedback form. We receive a regular report from this feedback form and although we can’t respond to every inquiry, we will respond periodically to the most frequently asked questions and comments via this Family Tree Maker blog.

Our Member Services agents are also available to receive customer support questions. They can be reached at 1-877-FTM-2008 (1-877-386-2008).”

Read the Welcome to the new Family Tree Maker blog! entry of 28 Sept 2007 posted by Benjamin Nettesheim, to make note of a few enhancements they are working on for mid-October delivery via online program update.

Happy family tree climbing!

READERS’ FEEDBACK: Photo ID, Census & FTM 2008

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION
From:
footnoteMaven@comcast.net
DearMYRTLE,

RE: DearMYRTLE's Family History Hour 28 Aug 2007 genealogy podcast. Thanks to Al for the addition of three more programs to our discussion on embedding information directly in photographs. It should be noted that IrfanView, Pixvue, and Google’s Picasa. are not currently available for Mac OS, which is the system the footnoteMaven uses. However, iPhoto is free with every Mac.

It is the idea of adding information to a photograph that was encouraged rather than any particular product. We discussed Elements, Photoshop and Bridge because that is what I am familiar with. Myrt added the program she uses, Corel’s Paint Shop Pro. I encourage everyone to experiment with whatever program they use to determine if it has the organizational capabilities we discussed.

Attaching a bibliographic entry to a photograph is one of the things the footnoteMaven finds most valuable.

CENSUS
From: Gary
gdtreat@yahoo.com
DearMYRTLE,

RE: Dodging the Census - Kaspar research, in addition to the 1930 record found by Caroline Shultz on the Karl Julius KASPAR family, note the following, also:

  • 1900 – NY, New York Co, Borough of Bronx, New York City, E D 994 sheet 18a - listed as Chas & Matilda Caspar with children Julius and Emma
  • 1910 – KY, Boyd Co, Magisterial District #5, Ashland city, E D 25 sheet 9b - listed as Carl & Matilda P Kasper with children Julius, Emma and twins, Theodore & Henry

These entries were found fairly quickly using the Soundex search option at http://www.ancestry.com/ for both "Kaspar" and "Caspar". I suspect EAKaspar may have been too specific in her search criteria. By broadening the search to all Kaspars within the area of interest, the variant first name spellings were easily identified.

DearMYRTLE,
Have you heard about all the fuss over the new version of Family Tree Maker 2008? The genealogy report along with several other reports and charts are no longer in the FTM. The books now have to be sent to Ancestry Press instead of us printing our book on our own. Here, I will just give you a taste of what a lot of folks are saying. http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.software.famtreemaker/mb.ashx

Redesigned Family Tree Maker 2008 software

Ancestry.com Releases Completely Redesigned Family Tree Maker 2008, No. 1 Selling Family Tree Software

Revamped Software Continues 18-Year Legacy of Innovation and Excellence; Offers Users Online Integration with Ancestry.com and Other Web Resources Including Microsoft(R) Virtual Earth(TM)

PROVO, Utah, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Ancestry.com, the world's largest online resource for family history, today announced the release of Family Tree Maker 2008, a completely redesigned and ground-breaking version of the world's No. 1 selling family history software. Family Tree Maker 2008 boasts an intuitive new interface and dozens of new features built on an entirely revamped, modern platform - the result of a two-year, back-to-the-drawing- board development process.

In one software bundle, Family Tree Maker 2008 provides users tools to quickly build their family trees, record their memories and organize their family photos, stories, video and audio clips. Users can quickly find and import facts and historical documents about their family from the Internet and print custom-designed family trees and books. With dynamic satellite maps and customizable timelines, Family Tree Maker 2008 truly broadens the capabilities that every family history program should include.

"Family Tree Maker 2008 redefines family tree building software, providing users with powerful, unrivaled tools and resources to discover and share their family stories," said Tim Sullivan, CEO of The Generations Network, Inc., parent company of Ancestry.com. "The software's seamless integration with the Ancestry.com Web site further solidifies Ancestry.com
as the family history authority both on and offline."

Family Tree Maker users can tap into Ancestry.com's unrivaled collection of family history records and powerful search features - without leaving Family Tree Maker. When connected to the Internet, Family Tree Maker 2008 automatically searches Ancestry.com for historical documents about the individuals in the user's family tree. With a few mouse clicks, users with an Ancestry.com subscription can view and import these historical records into their family tree.
"Family Tree Maker 2008 offers every user an intuitive out-of the-box experience," said Megan Smolenyak, Chief Family Historian for Ancestry.com.

"Ancestry.com developers worked closely with industry professionals as well as family history beginners to create a program that uniquely spans the range of user ability with an easy-to-use interface that also offers advanced, robust features."

The following new and updated features expand Family Tree Maker's capabilities:

-- Interactive Street and Satellite Maps - Use Microsoft(R) Virtual Earth(TM)* to access dynamic street and satellite maps that pinpoint important locations in ancestors' lives from within Family Tree Maker. A place-name database and hint engine helps users correctly enter
localities in a consistent format.

-- Web Integration -View and search any Web site from within Family Tree Maker*. Once users locate information about their ancestors, they can easily import appropriate images, text and even a cached version of the Web page in to their family tree.

-- Individual Biographies - Create biographical sketches for each ancestor, adding life facts, historical documents, photos and other digital media. In addition, timelines highlight important personal, family and world events that occurred during ancestors' lifetimes.

-- Media Organization -Upload and manage image, audio, video and other media files. Users can attach these files directly to specific people in a family tree to better illustrate their family story.

-- Publish Family History Books - Create customized, illustrated family history books. Ancestry Press allows users to bring their family history to life with professionally designed charts, timelines, reports and pedigree charts, as well as photos, historical records and more. The books can then be professionally printed and bound (or printed on home printers).

First released in 1989, Family Tree Maker ranks in longevity among Microsoft Windows (first released in 1985) and Adobe Photoshop. Family Tree Maker 2008 is now available for sale online at http://www.familytreemaker.com for $39.95. The program is also set to be released in select retail stores in October 2007.

* Internet access required for Microsoft Virtual Earth and other Web integration.

FTM 2008 Beta available

Experimenters cautioned to backup original data first

From: Beth Gay bethg@integrity.com
DearMYRTLE,
I have a message for your blog. CAUTION everyone to backup their FTM family file and make a copy of the file and rename it. If they open their FTM file in the new version they will not be able to reopen it in the older version. Also the download is huge so they need to have broadband or access to it. Here is the link:

The Family Tree Maker 2008 beta is now available for download by the public at http://beta.familytreemaker.com. Please feel free to share this link with friends and family, post it to mail lists or forums, etc. Everyone is welcome to download the beta.

Best regards,
Beth Gay

DearBETH,
Thank-you for the heads up. Folks, Beth is the list administrator for a new mailing list:
WIKI-GenPages. You can search the WIKI-GenPagesarchives for a specific message or browse them, going from one message to another. Some list archives are not available; if there is a link here to an archive but the link doesn't work, it probably just means that no messages have been posted to that list yet.

REGARDING FAMILY TREE MAKER 2008 BETA
Ol' Myrt checked out the site at Beth's suggestion, and discovered among other things that the program is very large – 400MB of space is required. Remember "BETA" means test version of something that may or may not work out to be the next version of a software program. See: Software release Cycle at Wikipedia.

From FTM's 2008 beta download site we read:

"This is a beta program; therefore there are no guarantees that the program will perform correctly, nor are there any warranties of any kind.

Since this beta version is still in development it may crash or fail to function correctly. Though unlikely, installing the program may also negatively affect the operation of your computer. Files created in this beta may not open in the release version of the product. Always keep a backup of your data in another genealogy program (such as Family Tree Maker 16).

The beta will stop functioning on August 24th. If you have entered information into the program that you would like to preserve please be sure to create a GEDCOM export before the 24th of August."

The minimum system requirements for running the program are:

  • Operating System: Windows XP/Vista
  • Processor: 500 MHz Intel Pentium II or equivalent (1 GHz or faster processor recommended)
  • Hard Disk: 400 MB for installation. Additional space required for data files.
  • Memory: 256 MB of RAM (512 MB of RAM recommended)
  • Monitor: 800x600 resolution (1024x768 resolution recommended)
  • Internet: All online features require internet access

Happy family tree climbing!
