Genea-Quilters: Blog & FGS 2010 field trip

Is there more to life than GENEALOGY? Yes, QUILTING!

Ol' Myrt here as been a busy bee after a week of discussions about hitting the quilt fabric shops as we travel to NGS and FGS genealogy conferences each year among fellow Genea-bloggers and Facebook friends Tami Glatz, Gena Philbert Ortega and others. (Great run-on sentence, wouldn't you say?)

We're planning space for individual reports about the great quilt shops we discover in our journeys.

You wouldn't want to miss a fantastic, nearby quilt shop when visiting a distance ancestral cemetery, church or court house, now would you?

So we've formed the Genea-Quilters Facebook group and created a new Genea-Quilters blog. It is very  EASY to create using free web resources, so it costs us virtually nothing to run our wildly creative organization. May I suggest your genealogy society (or any other group for that matter) can significantly increase interest and advertise your events using these same social networking tools.

In the few short hours since the group was formed this afternoon, members are bringing together old blog posts about heirloom quilts and the quilts we've made. Folks inclulding Roger Moffat, Becky Jamison and Tami Glatz have contributed pics & descriptions of genealogy quilts. Patti Hobbs contributed a link to her Sam's Quilt blog entry. Tina Sansone and Audrey Collins expressed an interest in family quilts. Others like Caroline Marshall Pointer recently took pics of quilts and are willing to share if the photos turn out OK.

If you are attending the 2010 Federation of Genealogical Society (FGS) Conference in Knoxville, TN, make time to participate in one or more Genea-Quilters events:

  • FIELD TRIP: Consider joining the Genea-Quilters field trip to MeMaw's rated as a favorite, when the American Quilters Society asked its Facebook group members "What is your favorite shop to purchase quilting supplies (include the City and State)?"
  • FAT QUARTER SHARE: Saturday, 21 August 2010 at 12 noon in the FGS Conference exhibit hall at the Knoxville Convention Center which is open to the public.
  • RAFFLE: Win the first semi-annual Genea-Quilters Basket Raffle Saturday, 21 August 2010 at 12 noon in the FGS Conference exhibit hall at the Knoxville Convention Center. We're going to keep the money in the kitty, to award an even bigger and better Genea-Quilters Gift Basket at the NGS Conference 11-14 May 2011 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Happy family tree climbing!
