Georgia Archives: Fri and Sat hours only

I just received the following notice from our friends at the Georgia Archives.

Subject: New Hours
From: "Leverette, Rosa"
Date: Sat, July 09, 2011 1:52 pm
Beginning July 1, 2011, public hours at the Georgia Archives are now Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The new hours are a result of reductions in the Georgia Archives’ fiscal year 2012 budget. We regret the inconvenience this may cause researchers, and we greatly appreciate your understanding.

Thank you,

The Georgia Archives

I fear more of this will be happening as our economy continues to struggle under enormous debt, downward trends in the housing industry and startling high unemployment figures. As such genealogists should definitely check the website for each archive, library, county courthouse, etc before attempting to visit in person for research.

For those of you with Georgia research in mind, be sure to check out the Georgia Archives website:

It was here that I clicked "COLLECTIONS" and found useful information to help you prepare for the trip:

Records On Site

  • Finding Aids @ Georgia Archives - Information about original records
  • Book Catalog (GIL) - books, periodicals, manuscript collections, selected microfilm
  • Vital records - If you're looking for birth, marriage, or death records, start here. The State Archives does not house many of these records, but we'll tell you what we have and where to look for others.
  • Virtual Vault - Digital Collections

Make good use of the limited time you have by identifying wherever possible the manuscript files you wish to view during your visit.

Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt     :)
Your friend in genealogy.
