This is the quilt that June made

What do you do when your genealogist husband is recovering from a serious car accident with staples in his skull? If you are June Spear, you stitch up the logos from his genealogy conference bags into a magnificent quilt.

You cannot imagine how wonderful it was to see Elmer Spear tonight as we all prepare for the 2011 Federation of Genealogical Societies annual conference here in Springfield, Illinois. This is Elmer as he shows off June's labor of love.

When last I saw Elmer it was at dinner our final evening after our classes in June 2011 at Samford University's Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research. I had already given him one of my Genea-Quilters business cards, so he could share the link with June. Elmer told me that June was going to make this quilt, but neither of us knew then how much her hopes and prayers were to be put into every stitch.

It was following that IGHR banquet that we all awoke to a torrential downpour. Unfortunately in the mess on the interstate, Elmer's car got caught in a large puddle and careened off the road taking out a guard rail and totaling Elmer's car. For weeks we prayed for Elmer and June as she kept us up to date on Elmer's Genealogy Corner page on Facebook.

Somehow Elmer's IGHR bag was retreived from the mangled mess of his car, and June inserted the logo on the bottom left panel of the quilt.  Elmer joked tonight that the IGHR bag was the toughest one to get.

Color Elmer proud -- as his smile above indicates.

Dear, dear Elmer and June, we're so glad that miracles got to happen for you both this summer.

Happy family tree climbing!
