October is Family History Month / SB Genealogical Society 40th Birthday
Santa Barbara, CA – September 13, 2012
October marks Family History Month and the Santa Barbara County
Genealogical Society is celebrating in a big way with a month long list
of events and classes.
At the same time the Society is celebrating its 40th birthday. Starting
40 years ago with an ad in the local paper that brought out about 27
interested people, the society has grown to be the largest of its type
between Los Angeles and San Francisco with over 600 paid members and
boasts a 7000 square foot library with over 25,000 offerings, The
Sahyun Genealogical Library located at 316 Castillo St. in Santa Barbara
is an incredible local resource for anyone interested in learning more
about their family history and is staffed with friendly, knowledgeable
volunteers who can help experts and novices alike to find their roots
and add leaves to their family tree.
A two day open house is scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 10am-3pm and
Sunday October 14, 10am-1pm. The Public is invited and there will be
tours, classes, and refreshments.
In addition to the open house, Family History Month is filled with a
full schedule of classes, special interest groups, tours, lectures and
demonstrations. A calendar of events can be found at the Society web
