BOOKSHELF: Map Guide to Luxembourg Parish Registers

Compiler Kevan M. Hansen has been churning out these invaluable map guides for Germanic states over a number of years, chock full of advice about where to find records. In the forward for the 2016 publication Map Guide to Luxembourg Parish Registers:

"If only a general area is known, perhaps from a passenger list or naturalization record, this resource can also aid in identifying which church parishes can be found in that locality, or what civil records can exist [...]. Lastly, this resouce can empower the researcher when confronted with the necessity of a radius search."  

This book explains the three administrative districts, each with 12 cantons. Kevan then provides a canton map with a number corresponding to the approximate location of each village. Also provided is a brief history of Luxembourg, the type of known genealogical record sets such as census, church, emigration, and civil vital records and where they are available online if possible. As we know, it's not all found on the internet, and thankfully Kevan provides info about the state archives and library in addition to genealogical societies in the US and abroad that focus on Luxembourg ancestry. You'll also find suggestions for a gazetteer and language assistance.

Here we have the example of the Canton Luxembourg, District Luxembourg:

In the image below we find Catholic Church Records for Canach are have survived from 1707-1792 and for Lenningen from 1687-1799. Notice alternate spelling villages in French, German and Luxembourgish are provided. The latter is particularly helpful where we only know of a phonetic spelling of an ancestor's village, passed down through generations.

FHL: European Family History Conference 12-16th Sept 2016

This time the focus is on European research, with classes on Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Polish partitions like Prussian, Silesia, Galicia, Austria, in addition to Czeck, Russia, Volga Germans, Bessarabia, and North Casucvasus research. FGS announces annual conference locations through 2020

While Mr. Myrt and I are looking forward to the annual Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference 2016 in Springfield, we are pleased to receive news of the dates and cities for FGS conferences through 2020!

August 16, 2016 – Austin, TX. The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announces the FGS 2019 National Conference will be held August 21-24 in Washington, D.C., and the FGS 2020 National Conference will be held September 2-5 in Kansas City, Missouri.

“We are extremely excited for all our upcoming conferences and look forward to visiting Washington, D.C., and Kansas City in future years,” says FGS President D. Joshua Taylor. “From 2016 to 2020, our conference venues are steeped in both history and research resources and make perfect settings for genealogists and family historians.”

The announcement extends the upcoming FGS conferences schedule to the year 2020 and includes:

August 31 - September 3, Springfield, Illinois
FGS 2016 National Conference — Celebrate our 40th Anniversary with us and local host Illinois State Genealogical Society as we return to the Land of Lincoln in 2016! Register now for FGS 2016!

August 30 - September 2, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
FGS 2017 National Conference — Pittsburgh will provide a wonderful historical backdrop with its rich genealogical resources for this four day genealogy event with local host Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society.

August 22 - 25, Fort Wayne, Indiana
FGS 2018 National Conference — FGS returns to the Hoosier State in 2018 providing attendees convenient access to Allen County Public Library which houses one of the largest genealogical research collections available with records from around the world.

 

Aug 21-24 2019, Washington DC and Sep 2-5 2020, Kansas City, Missouri

Each conference will be joined and hosted by a local genealogical organization. The Illinois State Genealogical Society will welcome FGS this year in Springfield and the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society in 2017. Local hosts for future conferences will be announced at a later date.

Hangouts Going Away? No worries for us

DearREADERS,
Folks have been pinging Ol' Myrt about today's announcement from Google that hangouts are moving from Google+ to YouTube Live starting September 12th. Cousin Russ and I foresee no problems. Before we moved to the "Business Hangouts" wrapper, we were scheduling all our hangouts via YouTube anyway. In fact we created the following video almost a year ago:

FOR THOSE SOCIETIES USING HANGOUTS
Just remember there are two types of YouTube Live streams:

• Stream Now (spontaneously live)
  
• Events (These can be scheduled in advance!)

With "YouTube Events" you may:

• Create a web page or blog post with details of the topic, date and time of the YouTube Event.
•  Add the URL for the YouTube Event to your web page or blog post so people know where to watch.
• NOTE: If your YouTube Channel has over 1,000 subscribers, is monetized and has Google AdSense activated, you have the option of embedding the video in your web page or post. DearMYRTLE's YouTube Channel complies on all requirements and has for about 3 years.

Cousin Russ and Ol' Myrt here will continue to use the same Business-Hangouts interface we've used since the beginning of the year since it doesn't require Google+ to operate.

We had previously used the YouTube Events for about 18 months prior to 1 Jan 2016. If there is a hiccup on day 1, we can quickly revert back to the "OLD TO US, new to everyone else" method. No worries, folks! We've got this!
